Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is a procedure that is an addition to IVF. While the stimulation and ovum retrieval aspects remain the same as an IVF cycle, the fertilization process is quite different. ICSI is a technique whereby a single sperm is selected and injected directly into an egg. This procedure allows for more control and often results in a higher fertilization rate than IVF. Indications for the use of ICSI are commonly related to poor sperm parameters such as low concentration, low motility, or poor morphology.
